Sonic Bathtub

Sonic Bath

concept, installation, sound: Alexandre Decoupigny with support & help from Lee Patterson, Jochen Blauert and Imogen Stidworthy

Sonic Bath depicts a three dimensional audio illusion of an empty space turning into a giant bathtub filling up with water.

Listening to a specific and familiar soundscape of our everyday domestic environment in the context of a sound installation has the power to evoke a new awareness and sensibility towards this sound event. I created Sonic Bathtub to form awareness for the extensive use of natural resources in modern society. Already in twenty years from now water prices can rise to such an extent, that a real bath becomes an investment. It already is a luxury that only a small percentage of people on this planet can enjoy regularly. As an alternative I invented the sonic bathtub. You can always enjoy the virtual pleasure of the sonic bathtub without having to use any water.

If not for this, Sonic Bath can be merely taken as a pleasurable experience that will give you a heightened sense of awareness for the sounds of a filling bathtub. It might also trigger some positive memories you already connect with this sound event. And if all this fails, merely take Sonic Bathtub as a comment by the artist against the prejudice that many people regard sonic art as a rather dry kind of subject.

Sonic Bath was displayed on a 10.2 Surround Speaker System as part of the group show "Site and Sound" by the Rogue Wave Sound Art Collecitve.
