Worauf wartest Du ? - Rae Spoon & Alexandre Decoupigny

Routine yet full of secrets, the Underground acts as a mirror of Berlin’s history and as a seismograph of the city’s current feel. It serves as the starting point of a new public art project called “U10 – from here to the imaginary and back again” initated by five artists in collabouration with the NGBK, Berlin.  As part of an international public art competition , eight projects have been selected to explore the Berlin underground as a real and as an imaginary world. Four were realised in 2009.

One of them was "Worauf wartest du ?"

A CD-Production and Live-Music-Performances in Subway Stations. A collaboration with BVG workers Georg Burkard and Wolfgang Adam as well as the public on underground stations of a phantomline in Berlin.

Made of a Journey into the imagination and back again. Based on conversations with travellers on existing stations of a phantomline in the Berlin Underground. Armed with a small audio recorder we went out regularly to meet random passengers and workers on the underground of Berlin with the question "What are you waiting for ?". Quickly we realized how absurd this must appear. However, it was the absurdity that made these mini-performative moments so special. This way we collected numerous interesting stories and answers and  developped these stories made songs out of them. In a feverish rush we got into the material and recorded a substantial collection of songs between folk, electro and sound art. Moody compositions of electro-organic beauty, each as unique as the stories that lead them into existence. We could only achieve this, since our writing process was supported by Georg Burkhart and Wolfgang Adam. Both were/are professionally related to the BVG (Berlin Public Transport Company) and have a great affinity to music. We worked together in some unique sessions and  two substantial songs of this record came together this way.

Needless to say how great it was to carry them back into their places of origin and play these fine tunes early in the morning to people rushing into work or coming home from work in some key places of berlin
