Under the bridge - the Sound of Istanbuls Underground

In the opening sequence of crossing the bridge-the sound of istanbul by fatih akin, a voice over tells us about a quote by confuzius: "if you want to learn about a culture, listen to its music.... "

I saw this movie after I decided I wanted to work with instanbul's underground musicians and it was clear to me then, that i was on the right way.
In "Under the Bridge- the sound of Istanbul's" underground" i want to meet up and work with musician's and groups from Istanbul's musical underground. Together, I want to find a song from their repertiore and learn to play it with them.

Is it possible to hear culture ? Can i get closer to understanding a place about which i have absolutely no real understanding through active listening and learning ? How does the soundscape of a city impact on the sound of the music made within this very soundscape ? How much of local and global culture is reflected in the music i will encounter and can we hear this ? How does my presence have an impact on this ? What does the music tell me about the social organisation of the place where it comes into being ?

From the 18.08.09 until the 25.08.09 I was living in SehBender Sk.14 in Istanbul, Beyoglu, as part of my Apartment Project Residency at the Sound Room. In order to initialise the project “Under the Bridge – the Sound of Istanbul’s Underground” I was out to meet with active members of Istanbul’s Musical underground with the help of a STEP beyond travel grant (see www.rhiz.eu/artefact-35322-en.html for project proposal).
